Dates: January 2011 - July 2011
Firm: Liminal Projects
Principals: Omar Khan, Laura Garafalo
Collaborators:
Kenneth Mackay, Mark Nowaczyk, Josh Graham
Role: Designer

The scope of the extension includes an addition of a gymnasium as well as the renovation of existing programs that include the computer lab, offices and reading rooms. The derived formal expression of the proposed roof playfully engages the existing conditions of the school house.

In addition, by raising and lowering particular points along the folded roof of the gymnasium, maximum lighting conditions enter the existing classrooms. Strategic openings in the proposed form bring natural light into the space.

I worked together with colleagues to iterate through a series of design schemes. I continued developing the project at every stage of the process including plans, sections, elevations, initial structural systems, lighting analysis, digital and physical models and presentation documents.

I casted and prepared bronze gummi bears for a trip to China during the summer of 2004. Throughout my travels, I traded a bronze gummi bear for a personal item of people I met along the way. Xiao Xiong, or Little Bear in Mandarin, inverts the monumental role of traditional bronze sculptures. Instead, the celebrated moment becomes the exchange between two individuals. There are currently over 40 bronze gummi bears in different parts of China, Europe and the United States.

Jarring Sound, Performance

(Link to video. Best experienced on high volume and if listening through headphones).

“A” is a performance during a Buffalo Pecha Kucha event. "A" explores the history of the different standards set for concert A, now (not quite) universally accepted as 440 hertz.

Five sound jars were distributed to the audience. Each sound jar included a speaker and an iPod. The soundtrack consisted 11 different standards set throughout western music history. Each frequency was set for precisely ten seconds.

The start of the piece was left intentionally imprecise, as the audience members were instructed to begin loosely around the turn of the each slide. This then created moments of phasing and overlap with effects that parallel the dial tone of telephones. This tactical deployment deconstructs the 440 hertz as the universal A.

The standardization of the concert A has a long history in Western music and has fluctuated from 380 to 480hz. The French government in an effort to control “pitch inflation” was the first to enact a law in 1859 that set the concert A at 435 hz. Today, though 440 hz is widely accepted as the standard, other frequencies are still used.

The performance was sited in the context of a Pecha Kucha presentation in Buffalo, New York on February 13, 2010 in which each individual is allowed a total of 20 slides with 10 seconds each to describe them. “A” also engages the format of Pecha Kucha by staging the presentation of the work as a work itself. The performance was inspired by John Cage’s 4’33” in which the projection images were of music pages with a continuous A note.

Ten tables, each sixty feet long, continuously
run through from the kitchen to the dining
area. Both patrons and dining staff share the
same table. Food is both prepared on the
same table as it is eaten.

Diners are excluded from all views of Niagara
Falls. Instead, the dining experience will
consist of watching the shadows of the cooks
and chefs as they prepare the meals.

Workers have the coveted views of the
Canadian side of Niagara Falls. The everyday
experience of the workers will consist of
food preparation while cantilevering into the
air beyond the cliff face.

iMeasure (iM) Headphones is a custom set of sonar headphones that explores digitally mediated sonic-spatial relationships. iM Headphones is embedded with a set of sonar sensors that take spatial readings of the physical environment and “play” particular sounds in relation to the data. iM Headphones therefore provides a specific pixellated aural experience. An individual’s sonic perception of space is a direct translation of two measured points that extend from the headphones. On the one hand, listening becomes an immensely reduced experience. On the other hand, the individual’s behavior and movement through the surrounding landscape fundamentally shifts when adapting and re-establishing their relationship between body, sound and space. The device is therefore explored as an apparatus that mediates the movements of the body to the physical landscape.

The following research is informed through multiple stages of design, fabrication and implementation of the device. The potential behavioral implications of iM Headphones are then explored through three separate phases of conducted experiments and walks.

In 1894, King Camp Gillette, future inventor of the Gillette razor, proposed a socialist utopian city that would house the entire world by Niagara Falls. His book The Human Drift details the rise of Metropolis, his vision of the city of the future.

What if Metropolis had been built?

Metropolis, An Alternative History of Niagara Falls is a retrospective speculative look at Niagara Falls as both a physical and political border. Through King Camp Gillette's vision, the city of Metropolis is explored as a border town - a zone in continual flux and tension between invention and conflict. Events from this world are spliced together with real and fabricated narratives that explore conceptions of utopias and dystopias. Through storytelling, the mythical qualities of an alternative vision are re-interpreted to suggest a world that, though different, reflect our own understanding of particular border conditions and relationships.

This project was created for the studio Border Town. Special thanks to Tim Maly, Emily Horne and the participants for an amazing studio. Also, special thanks to Michael King, Nick Bruscia, 3d modeler extraordinaire and Chris Vesper for stories of Niagara Falls.<img
SYNC proposes an interactive lighting system in the parks of New York City. Inspired by research of Pterotypx malaccae, a particular species of fireflies where all the males flash in unison, the proposed light units respond to one another, and will also create this phenomenon of SYNC. Each unit will eventually SYNC and flash collectively every six seconds in relation to the human eye, and thus slow the physiological rhythms of the body.

The lighting units will also respond to external light stimuli, including cell phones, cars, flashlights, etc. In addition, the proposed units are powered by solar panels, thus allowing for reactivity to daylight levels as well as seasonal shifts. The life spans of the units are cyclical, as they die out during the winter and are re-born in the summer.

This investigation began with the research of John and Elisabeth Buck. Certain parameters for SYNC were then abstracted and constructed in a computer program environment Processing. This research is interested in the parameters for this particular form of emergence, and has been inspired by the research of mathematician Steven Strogatz, as well as other cybernetic theorists. It also investigates the potential for introducing a lighting system that is more attuned to the human scale.
